VISION
The
vision of the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department is to have the best
undergraduate programs in Electrical Engineering
and Computer Engineering in the State of
Florida, and to have a nationally recognized
graduate program driven by excellence in
research.
MISSION
The
mission of the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering is
to provide excellence
in undergraduate education so that our graduates
become critical thinkers, creative problem
solvers, and life long learners; to further
the quality of our graduate programs by conducting
impact-oriented research that responds to
the needs of the State of Florida, in particular,
and the nation, in general; and to serve
our community.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Florida International University (FIU) is an urban
doctoral granting institution located in Miami with
campuses at University Park and North Miami, and
a third campus recently established housing the Center
for Engineering and Applied Sciences. Chartered by
the Florida Legislature in 1965, the University opened
its doors in 1972. Twenty seven years later, FIU
now offers more than 220 baccalaureate, master's,
and doctoral degree programs through its many Colleges
and Schools. As FIU celebrates its 25th anniversary,
enrollment is nearing the 30,000 mark, which is a
significant increase from the 16,400 enrollment a
decade ago. The number of faculty has reached 1,200,
and sponsored research totaled close to 30 million
dollars this past year. Women constitute 58% of the
total student population. FIU is recognized as having
the largest contingent of Hispanic students of any
doctoral granting institution.
Within commuting distance of FIU are a wide range
of family oriented communities, beach communities,
and historic districts. Furthermore, Miami has
positioned itself as the gateway to Latin America
and the Caribbean countries, and is among the nation's
most dynamic and exciting communities with respect
to cultural pluralism, beautiful climate, recreational
activities, a diverse cultural life, and tourism. |
The Engineering Accreditation
Commission of the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredits
engineering programs on a nationwide basis.
Students wishing more information about accreditation
should consult their respective departmental
office or the Office of the Dean. The following
baccalaureate engineering programs in the
college are accredited by ABET, Inc., Biomedical
Engineering Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering
and Mechanical Engineering.
